Yesterday I asked the Q about non-Dead shows and got a great response. Tonight I have to go to the company Christmas party, and I'm going to ask another one, then come back later to check the responses. It probably won't start nearly as long of a thread, but here goes:

August 1980. Mississippi River Festival, Edwardsville, Illinois. Sitting outside the gate, waiting for the show to start with a ticket for a friend who was supposed to meet me there. Came there with his money and my $7.00 needed to buy my own ticket and that was it. Back then, you could actually buy easily affordable tix day of show at a lot of places, but this was before the explosion of popularity that The Grateful Dead experienced in the mid-80's. Looked down and saw Ulysses S. Grant's grim mug looking right up at me, and I found myself $50 richer than I was before I got there that day. Good omen, too: far and away, the most amazing show I ever saw.

Anybody else with stories of good fortune that came your way at shows?

We arrived the previous night to stand in line to get tickets for a string of shows in Philly. We stood in this amazingly long line all day, finally got to the ticket window, ordered a bunch of tickets for all our friends for all three nights, put down our money, and they said:

I am sorry, but we can not accept one hundred dollar bills.

We didn't have a credit card. They allowed one of us to stay by the window, while I went running outside to find someone who could break our bills. As you could imagine, nobody had that kind of money. But finally I got lucky, ran back inside, and we got our tickets. All of them were stamped "limited viewing", "behind stage", etc. 30 seconds later they closed the windows: SOLD OUT.

Thanks to whoever you were!!!!!

85 Red Rocks
Flew into Denver with a friend the day before first show with no tickets, no place to stay and just enough money for tickets for the 3 nights. Brought a bunch of shirts to sell to make money for a trip home.
Hitched a ride down to Morrison and sitting out on main street (it's like a 10 house town) and start some small talk with some local folks about the impending rain storm.
Once she finds out we have no place to stay she says "Well your just gonna have to stay with us". We get to the house in Denver, sits up on the hill overlooking the football stadium. Have a great night partying with some great folks, swapping stories and answering questions about "Why would you do all this just to see a band" - These folks were not Dead Heads. Meals and all - just a wonderful, wonderful experience.
Top it off, they insist on giving us a ride back to Morrison the next morning. We score tickets for all 3 nights on day 1. Spend the next 3 days and nights between the shows and a local camp ground full of thousands of heads havinf fun all night.

I even managed to sell enough shirts to fund my trip home.

Life may be sweeter, for this I don't know ..............
